The Hearts & Mission Behind the Story

Meet Kristy
Kristy Brindley is a mother, mentor, and founder of the
just1mike foundation, honoring the life and spirit of her son Michael. Her story is one of transforming loss into love, and her debut book brings Michael’s hugs to children everywhere.

Michael was the kind of kid who noticed when someone needed a little extra care, and he always knew what to do...usually with a hug. Looks Like You Need a Big Hug was inspired by the simple, loving phrase Michael would say to his family, often just when they needed it most.
Kristy wrote this story to give children a way to express care, comfort, gratitude, forgiveness and connection.
Now living in Sonoma, California, Kristy enjoys time with family and friends, walking her dogs, gardening, mentoring youth, and sharing Michael’s message one hug at a time.
Meet Brendon "Mr. B"
Brendon Metcalf is an artist and educator based in San Francisco, CA. His father was an artist and his mother, a teacher. He also draws artistic inspiration from the media his three sisters enjoy and have shared with him - from anime and fantasy novels to video games. He credits his artistic growth to years of drawing sessions with friends, creating alongside students, and learning from generous mentors along the way.

These days, he continues to spend his time creating artwork, teaching and mentoring young artists, and enjoying life with the people he loves most.
You can see more of his work and the work of his students at Metcalf Academy.

just1mike - protecting young hearts
The just1mike foundation was created in memory of Michael Brindley,
a bright and loving teenager who passed away suddenly from sudden cardiac arrest at age 16.
Mission and volunteer-based, just1mike is dedicated to raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in youth and ensuring that schools and communities are prepared to respond when every second counts.
What began as a tribute to one remarkable boy has become a movement to protect many.
